Cochlear Implants
A cochlear implant, often referred to as a bionic ear, is a tiny electronic device that is surgically implanted to provide a sense of sound to profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing persons. Cochlear implants are different than hearing aids because instead of amplifying sound, they work to stimulate the auditory nerve.
The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that adults and children that used cochlear implants had an increased risk of developing bacterial meningitis, which includes headache, fever, stiff neck, seizures and other serious side effects. Other side effects include complete loss of hearing and dead tissue in the skin around the implants.
Cochlear implants were recalled in 2004 when Advanced Bionics and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that some devices contained residual water in their circuitry. While this cochlear implant defect was not likely to injure a patient, it was likely to cause the device to malfunction. This means that those with cochlear implants will eventually need to implant a new device.
The following signs indicate that the cochlear implants are failing to work:
- Total loss of sound
- Feelings of pain or discomfort
- Functioning on and off
- Hearing sudden loud noise/popping
Patients that have been injured after using cochlear implants may be entitled to compensation if they pursue a cochlear implant class action lawsuit. If you have been affected by recalled cochlear implants or have experienced side effects, it is advised to meet with a class action lawyer.
