Vioxx
Vioxx is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works to reduce inflammation, pain and fever in the body. Vioxx was used to treat osteoarthritis, acute pain, migraines and menstrual pain. Manufactured by Merck & Co. under the trade names Vioxx, Ceoxx and Ceeoxx, it was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in 2004 because of concerns about increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
In 1999, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Merck & Co. to sell Vioxx. Approximately ninety million patients in the U.S. had prescriptions for Vioxx, which had been marketed in over 80 countries.
After concerns and studies that linked Vioxx with increased risks of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke, respiratory problems, kidney and liver damage in patients, Merck & Co. announced a voluntary withdrawal of the drug from the U.S. and worldwide market in 2004.
