Yasmin/Yaz
Yasmin was introduced in 2001 by Berlex Laboratories as a combined hormonal oral contraceptive. After Berlex was acquired by Bayer Healthcare in 2006, they marketed Yaz, which was an identical drug to Yasmin, except that Yasmin contained 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol, while Yaz contained 20 mcg. Yasmin/Yaz was sold throughout the world and generated lots of revenue, until they were linked with problems and side effects.
Side effects such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Pulmonary Embolism (PE), heart attack, stroke and death were prevalent among women who used Yasmin/Yaz. These problems were linked to drospirenone, which works against the body's normal regulation of salt and water. This causes high potassium levels, also called hyperkalemia, which results in serious heart problems and other serious health issues.
Yasmin/Yaz users reported migraine headaches, depression and mood swings. Many women reported a disruption of normal menstrual patterns, endometriosis and fatigue. The worst side effects for Yasmin/Yaz users was stroke and pancreatitis. The strokes were caused by blood clots and Yasmin/Yaz users exhibited the highest occurrences of strokes than users of any other oral contraceptives.
In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert about the serious risks associated with Yasmin/Yaz.
