Fleeing the scene of an accident can have serious legal repercussions.

Car accidents can be scary, even for the person who was clearly at fault. The lack of car or health insurance, concern of an inflated deductible and fear of criminal charges can sometimes cause people to flee the scene of an accident, rather than own up to their mistake.

If a person is injured or killed as a result of a hit-and-run accident, the driver that struck them or their vehicle could face felony charges under California law, and if convicted, guilty parties could be sentenced to substantial prison time.

Anaheim police are on the lookout for a driver that struck and killed a three-year-old girl on Wednesday night.

A 26-year-old Anaheim woman was pushing her daughter across a crosswalk when witnesses said an out-of-control 1995 Nissan Maxima struck the two.

According to KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, witnesses claim that the mother was sent roughly 40 feet into the middle of the road, while the young girl and parts of the stroller were propelled another 30 feet.

While the woman is listed in critical condition at UC Irvine Medical Center, her daughter was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.

California Highway Patrol officers found the Nissan about a mile away from the accident. The car was abandoned when authorities located it, with a shattered windshield and a damaged bumper.

If the suspect is found, he or she could face more than than just felony hit-and-run charges, as police said that the vehicle was allegedly stolen from Stanton.

Californians that injure a pedestrian or other motorist in an accident should find a criminal lawyer to represent them if any charges are filed against them. Whether or not they are deemed to be at fault in the accident, they may be still held accountable under California law.
